HOW DIGESTION TAKES PLACE INSIDE THE BODY?

When the food enters into the body, It becomes wet by the contact of water and saliva. Saliva contain an enzyme called salivary amylase which breaks down the complex starch into simple sugar. Then it moves into the food pipe or Oesophagus. Rhythmic contraction and relaxation apply force to move food forward. These rhythmic contraction and relaxation of foodpipe is called peristaltic Movement. Opposite movement of this, known as Anti-peristaltic Movement occurs sometimes inside our body during vomiting. Anyway, Then the food moves into the stomach. Gastric glands are present in the walls of the stomach which release hydrochloric acid, protein digesting enzyme called pepsin and mucus. The hydrochloric acid creates an acidic medium of food which facilitates the action of enzyme pepsin. The mucus protects the inner lining of the stomach from the hydrochloric acid. Then the food moved into the small intestine. The exit of food is regulated by the sphincter which allows small amount of food to move into the small intestine. Small intestine is a site where complete digestion takes place. It receives the juices secreted by liver and pancreas. The food is acidic which should be turned into alkaline for better action of pancreatic juice. Bile salts break down large globules of fats into small globules, increasing the efficiency of enzyme action. Pancreatic juice contain an enzyme called trypsin for digesting proteins and lipase for breaking down emulsified fats. Then the small intestine secretes intestinal juices which finally converts the protein into amino acid and complex carbohydrates into glucose and fats into fatty acid and glycerol. The digested food is absorbed in the walls of small intestine which is comprised of numerous finger-like projections called villi. It increases the surface area for absorbtion. It is then supplied with blood vessels which take the absorbed food to every cells of the body. The undigested food is taken up by the large intestine which absorb more water from the waste materials. Then the waste by-products are removed from the body via Anus. The exit of waste materials is regulated by the Anal Sphincter.

How Platelets Work? - Edu Foundation

When a tissue is wounded or a blood vessel is ruptured due to some injury, the blood flows through it. If not checked, it may cause an excessive loss of blood. Sometimes, this immense loss of blood even leads to death. However, the body has its own natural device of preventing the loss of blood by forming a "blood clot" which plugs the injury and stops further flow of blood, and also checks the entry of pathogenic microorganisms. The process of blood clotting is a complex process which is mainly initiated and maintained by the platelets which circulate around the body along with other blood components. In the region of injury, the platelets rupture and release a substance called thromoboplastin. It converts protein prothrombin into thrombin. Vitamin K is essential for the formation of prothrombin in liver. Thrombin then changes soluble fibrinogen protein into fibrin. The latter undergoes rapid polymerization to form long fibres. The fibres form a network over the damaged ...

What is Artificial Kidney? How it works? - Edu Foundation

Kidneys are most vital organs for survival of the organsisms. Though the kidneys remain active throughout the life, its efficiency gradually declines with normal ageing process. For example, its activity declines to about 50% by the age of 70 in human beings. The other causes of decline in the normal functioning of kidneys are diseases such as kidney infection, injury or restricted blood flow to kidneys. These abnormalities result in kidney damage and malfunctioning. A general term for decline in the performance of kidney due to a disease is kidney failure. Though it is not common, it may result to death within a couple of weeks if not treated properly. Kidney failure is often due to build up of potassium ions which causes heart failure. The failure of both kidneys immediately need medical intervention. There are two alternatives of kidney failure  (i) A matching kidney from a healthy person may be transplanted, or (ii) An 'artificial kidney' machine may be employed in or...

Circulatory System of Human Beings - Edu Foundation

Circulatory System of Human Beings  Circulatory System basically helps in the conversion of deoxygenated blood into oxygenated blood. When the deoxygenated blood enters into the right attrium through upper and lower Venacava, The right attrium contracts so that the blood moves into the right ventricle through the valve. When the right ventricle contracts, The deoxygenated blood moves into the lungs through pulmonary arteries. Lungs convert the deoxygenated blood into oxygen-rich blood. Then it returns to left attrium through pulmonary veins. When the left attrium contracts, The blood moves into the left ventricle. When the left ventricle contracts, The blood flows to every cells of the body through Aorta. In this way, Circulatory System takes place inside our body.
