What is Reproduction? How Reproduction Takes Place in Human Beings? - Edu Foundation

Reproduction may be defined as the production of new generation of individuals of the same species that are physically independent of their parents. Organisms reproduce to increase in number. All the members produced from the parents look like parents as well as they look very much like themselves. Thus, reproduction results in the increase of members which look alike. The organisms which look similar to each other belong to the same species.

Reproduction is an energy spending process which is not essential to maintain the life of an individual organism, as nutrition, respiration, excretion are the most essential life processes in the body. If one of the above life processes stop performing, then a man can not survive. But reproduction is the choice of someone else in order to increase in number. It provides group immortality by replacing the dead individuals with new ones for the survival of the species on this earth.

During copulation, the human male inserts his penis into the vagina of the female and releases gametes (Sperms) inside the genetial tract. Then, they travel upwards as they are small and motile and reach the oviduct where they may encounter the egg. After the fusion of gametes take place, Zygote (fertilised egg) starts dividing to form a ball ofbcells or embryo. It is implanted in the lining of the uterus where they continue to grow and develop organs to become foetus. The uterus prepares itself every month to receive and nuture the growing embryo. The embryo gets nutrition from the mother's blood with the help of a special tissue called placenta.

Placenta is a disc which is embedded in the uterine wall and contains villi on the embryo's side of the tissue and spaces on mother's side which surround the villi. This provides a large surface area for glucose and oxygen to pass from the mother to the embryo. Placenta allows nutrition uptake, thermo-regulation, Waste-elimination and Gas Exchange via the mother's blood supply.

The complete development of foetus, from the intial stage of conception till the birth of the young one, is called gestation. It takes 9 months for complete developmentIf, however, the egg is not fertilised, It lives for about one day. As ovary releases one egg every month, The uterus prepares itself every month to receive fertilised egg so that it's lining becomes thick and spongy. This would be required for nourishing the embryo, If fertilisation takes place. If fertilisation is not done, Then the lining is not needed any longer. Hence, It slowly breaks and comes out through vagina as blood and mucous. This cycle, is what we say as menstruation which lasts for about two to eight days.

Circulatory System of Human Beings - Edu Foundation

Circulatory System of Human Beings  Circulatory System basically helps in the conversion of deoxygenated blood into oxygenated blood. When the deoxygenated blood enters into the right attrium through upper and lower Venacava, The right attrium contracts so that the blood moves into the right ventricle through the valve. When the right ventricle contracts, The deoxygenated blood moves into the lungs through pulmonary arteries. Lungs convert the deoxygenated blood into oxygen-rich blood. Then it returns to left attrium through pulmonary veins. When the left attrium contracts, The blood moves into the left ventricle. When the left ventricle contracts, The blood flows to every cells of the body through Aorta. In this way, Circulatory System takes place inside our body. If you have still any doubts, then feel free to comment us.

How Platelets Work? - Edu Foundation

When a tissue is wounded or a blood vessel is ruptured due to some injury, the blood flows through it. If not checked, it may cause an excessive loss of blood. Sometimes, this immense loss of blood even leads to death. However, the body has its own natural device of preventing the loss of blood by forming a "blood clot" which plugs the injury and stops further flow of blood, and also checks the entry of pathogenic microorganisms. The process of blood clotting is a complex process which is mainly initiated and maintained by the platelets which circulate around the body along with other blood components. In the region of injury, the platelets rupture and release a substance called thromoboplastin. It converts protein prothrombin into thrombin. Vitamin K is essential for the formation of prothrombin in liver. Thrombin then changes soluble fibrinogen protein into fibrin. The latter undergoes rapid polymerization to form long fibres. The fibres form a network over the damaged ...

What is Artificial Kidney? How it works? - Edu Foundation

Kidneys are most vital organs for survival of the organsisms. Though the kidneys remain active throughout the life, its efficiency gradually declines with normal ageing process. For example, its activity declines to about 50% by the age of 70 in human beings. The other causes of decline in the normal functioning of kidneys are diseases such as kidney infection, injury or restricted blood flow to kidneys. These abnormalities result in kidney damage and malfunctioning. A general term for decline in the performance of kidney due to a disease is kidney failure. Though it is not common, it may result to death within a couple of weeks if not treated properly. Kidney failure is often due to build up of potassium ions which causes heart failure. The failure of both kidneys immediately need medical intervention. There are two alternatives of kidney failure  (i) A matching kidney from a healthy person may be transplanted, or (ii) An 'artificial kidney' machine may be employed in or...
